About Austin

Austin is the state capital of Texas, and an inland city bordering the Hill Country region. As the home of the University of Texas’ flagship campus, Austin is famous for its vibrant music scene, which centers around country, blues and rock genres. The many parks and lakes in Austin are popular for hiking, biking, swimming and boating. South of the city, Formula One's Circuit of the Americas raceway has hosted the United States Grand Prix.

Jobs in Austin

They say everything is bigger in Texas, and that includes the job market. As of 2018, the state led the country in terms of employment growth, with a big year-over-year increase in hiring. Austin, in particular, draws workers from both coasts, and enjoyed the biggest increase in the hiring rate with 15.8%. Much of this is due to the state’s strong economic growth, which has attracted talented workers coming from New York and San Francisco Bay Area.

Apple’s New Push

Tech giant Apple announced recently it is planning to invest $1 billion in a new campus in Austin, which will accommodate an extra 15,000 employees. The development of the new 126.7 acre site is likely to create thousands of new jobs during construction, as well as those being planned for once it opens. The new facility is less than a mile from the existing premises housing 6,200 employees. As one of the fastest growing regions in the U.S., Austin sees over 100 people move there every day—many of them for the tech jobs that are giving the city its new name of Silicon Hills.

Finding Work in Austin

Active service members and veterans have advantages in Austin over other cities in the region, because of the high demand for talented workers that isn’t quite being met by the migration from other areas. The state‘s Workforce Commission also offers tax rebates to companies hiring veterans, which include:

  • A maximum tax credit of $9,600 for employing disabled veterans who have a service-related disability, and who have been unemployed for six months or more.
  • A maximum of $5,600 for non-disabled veterans unemployed for six months.
  • $4,800 for disabled veterans with a service-connected disability, who are unemployed for less than six months.

All these incentives offer Austin companies great advantages in return for focusing their employment efforts on hiring veterans, and it certainly makes it worth their while to do so.
