About Hampton Roads VA

Hampton Roads is made up of seven separate and autonomous cities. Like other major metropolitan areas, it can be challenging to figure out where one city ends and the next begins. Many people call the region “Tidewater” or simply refer to one of its cities. With a landmass of nearly 1,500 square miles and a population of more than 1.7 million people, Hampton Roads is the 34th largest metropolitan statistical area in the United States.

Some of the local areas in the region are Southside, which is also known as South Hampton Roads, comprises the five cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach. The Peninsula is another location, which is made up of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg and Poquoson, as well as the counties of York and James City. Overall, the area represents 400 years of American history.

Hampton Roads Economy

Hampton Roads spent 10 years waiting for its economy to rebound, after a number of jobs were lost during the recession and military sequestration. Finally, by 2017, the per capita personal income had grown by 8.5% since 2008. The unemployment rate of 3.3% was the lowest it had been since 2007.

Manufacturing jobs grew by more than 4,000 during 2018 and were the fastest-growing of any industry in the region. There were more than 57,000 manufacturing workers in the region by the end of 2018, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics, out of more than 595,000 private employees. Plus, military spending has been on the rise after several flat years.

Hotels in the area took in $728 million in revenue last year, nearly $20 million more than before the recession. Private-sector job creation has been slower here, however, than in other metro areas, and the number of business establishments has not yet reached pre-recession levels.
