This position requires comprehensive knowledge of Mechanical components and systems. The Engineer II is responsible for researching, planning, and designing mechanical products and systems. This position directs and coordinates activities involved in fabrication, operation, application, and repair of mechanical products and systems. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

 

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

Designs Opto-Mechanical products to be used in instruments, controls, machines, and mechanical systems.
Analyzes and researches design requirements and specifications to determine feasibility of design or application.
Plans/directs engineering personnel in method of fabrication for designs based on expected manufacturing quantity usage.
Directs and coordinates fabrication and installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and customer specifications.
Responsible for data entry, document revision and control in the Thorlabs ERP system.
Design of complicated projects
R&D of new engineering efforts to expand business
Influences/plans product test procedures to ensure each design meets its target specifications.
Mentoring of Peers, Technicians, or New Hires
Design custom products (specials) and work with planning, manufacturing, and assembly to ensure the customer’s requirements are met
In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:

Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.
The Company retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.

 

Physical Activities:

Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. The employee may lift or move objects up to 20 pounds. Employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, may be noisy at times. Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments. The required PPE and training allow for the safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants and solvents, and safe operation of job-related equipment and tools.
Requirements
Experience:

Minimum 4 years of experience in mechanical engineering design
Designed Products that Achieved Commercial Success
Education:

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

Excellent statistical data analysis and problem-solving abilities.
Working knowledge on SolidWorks or similar 3D modeling software.
Strong innovation skill.
Effectively reports progress and problems through written or oral reports.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
Flexibility/adaptability in a fast-paced & dynamic environment.
Strong knowledge of optomechanical design and implementation practices
Strong proficiency in MS office and communication tools is a plus
Pay range for this position is $76,000 – $110,000 depending on experience
