With the large urban population of Memphis, jobs in the cotton and lumber industries are definitely plentiful. Companies like Allenberg Cotton, which is part of the Louis Dreyfus Corporation, employs more than 22,000 people. Cargill Cotton and Verso Paper provide jobs for over 5,000 between them. Two other large employers of Memphis residents are Gibson Guitars based in Nashville, and Smith and Nephew. When these companies are recruiting, they make it a point to focus on hiring veterans, women, and people from other minority population groups.
Jobs for Veterans in Memphis
Many veterans exit the military with excellent driving skills, so a city with a large transportation focus and a company like FedEx Express offers several opportunities at all levels. At the time of writing, the SimplyHired website showed FedEx looking for truck drivers at between $75,000 and $95,000 per year. Along with vehicles, it’s common to find vehicle maintenance jobs, and online advertisements showed multiple openings for mechanics of various types. And, of course, with the large number of residents, there are multiple administrative jobs that need to be filled. These include payroll clerks, sales operatives, and human resources personnel.
